Wooden Spoon forgotten as Reds beat defending champions

Mathew Leckie

Adelaide United have begun their Asian Champions League in style, by defeating the defending champions 1-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium on Wednesday night in front of 8374 fans.

Matthew Leckie was once again the hero for the Reds, scoring deep into injury time in the first half much to the delight of the home fans.

The goal was something special that came from virtually nothing, as Pohang had a corner when Matthew Leckie intercepted a pass to run the full field, and score.

The goal appeared to be an own goal off Hee Chul, but the officials deemed it to have come off Leckies boot.

New signings Sergio Van Dijk and Marcos Flores were named in the starting XI for United, whilst Adam Griffiths and Nigel Boogard were on the bench. Surprisingly joining them was Cassio.

Van Dijk had many great heading chances for United but failed to convert.

Brazilian imports Mota and Alexandro each had unbelievable chances for the Steelers in the first ten minutes, but failed to convert.

Adelaide skipper Travis Dodd had an incredible chance to put the icing on the cake but the ball skidded past the top-left of the goal.

The win leaves Adelaide equal-first in their group following Shandong Luneng's 1-0 victory over Sanfreece Hiroshima - a vital away win for Shandong.

United have now won three games in all competitions in a row after previously defeating Brisbane Roar and the Newcatle Jets.

Adelaide travel to China in a fortnight to take on Shandong Luneng, in a top-of-the-table clash.
